Who We Help
Animals (domestic, livestock, and wild) are an integral part of the
environment in which we live. Animal protection in disasters directly
and significantly impacts human safety, public health, mental health
and economic systems. In hurricanes, floods, wildfires and other
disasters, people will risk their own lives and the lives of response
personnel in order to protect their animals. Also, previous incidents of
emerging infectious disease in animal populations have adversely
affected human populations and the economy. Such diseases include
Avian Flu, West Nile Virus, Mad Cow Disease, Eastern Equine
Encephalitis, Foot and Mouth, and Glanders.
Massachusetts has addressed those challenges through the formation
of SMART. SMART is a coordinated network of organizations,
agencies and individuals who are committed to responding to the
needs of the animal population in disaster situations. This is part of an
overall effort to provide a timely and effective response to any
intentional or unintentional emergency involving animals resulting from
bioterrorism, agriterrorism, emerging infectious disease, man-made or
natural events.
Besides being a disaster team, SMART also helps by:
SMART members play a crucial role in help the local communities
develop their own local animal disaster plan.
SMART, in conjunction with the Veterinary Emergency and Specialty
Center of New England, offers pet first aid classes to the public.
SMART helps to educate the public on animals in disasters by offering
educational courses and free publications.
